VASL 4.0 User's Guide
- Installation

Installation

Installation of VASL is simpler than ever thanks to Java Web Start.  Clicking on this link from any browser will launch the latest version.  If the link doesn't work, first make sure you've installed Java 1.4.x and then read the notes here before requesting help via email.  On Windows systems, Web Start will prompt you to create a shortcut on your desktop for you to run the program without going through a web browser. On Mac-OS-X/Linux, you can launch VASL directly with the command line $JAVA_HOME/javaws/javaws http://www.vasl.org/ws/vasl.jnlp. VASL does not run on pre-OS-X Macintosh systems.

Preparation

Mapboards

In order to actually play a game, you will need one or more of the VASL maps.  The complete set of maps can be downloaded from the vasl.org Board and Overlay Archive.

Your VASL folder will contain a folder named boards, and inside the boards folder, a folder named overlays.

Unzip the various board archives and extract them to the boards folder. If you have downloaded the overlays, extract them to the overlays folder inside boards.

Additional Folders (optional)

You may also wish to create folders to store games you wish to save and downloaded scenario setup files (e.g., you could create two folders in your VASL directory named scenarios and games saved).

Below is a typical setup with the VASL folder created inside of C:\Program Files\VASSAL:

The VASSAL Engine

VASL is based on the VASSAL Engine, which can be used to make VASL-like playing aids for any kind of board game.  Hey, if it can handle ASL, then any other game should be cake, right?  You can launch VASSAL by clicking here.
